About our Region
Welcome to the website of the South Queensland & Northern NSW Region of the Australian Alpaca Association (AAA QLDNSW). Our region is the only one to span two states. We have members across the Brisbane and Gold Coast area, further west near Toowoomba and Texas, and throughout coastal and inland Northern NSW south to Coffs Harbour.
Alpacas have been in Australia for over 25 years. We have the largest number of alpacas outside of their native Peru and the industry here is emerging as a major contender in the world’s luxury fleece markets. The fibre is used to create luxury and practical garments and homewares, including carpet, and is in demand from spinners, felters and weavers who enjoy its soft feel and texture when creating their unique handcrafted items.
The South Queensland & Northern NSW region is one of eight regions of the Australian Alpaca Association. We promote and support our members by keeping them informed and up to date with this exciting industry. We have an enthusiastic membership and share our knowledge and skills at field days, workshops, shows and social activities.
Our members are continually working to improve the quality of their individual herds and are active members of the Australian Alpaca Association. Many breeders enjoy showing their animals throughout the year. This provides an opportunity for people to see a number of animals and talk with many breeders all in one location. Alpaca owners enjoy talking about their animals and have a wealth of information to share. Depending on the time of year, visiting a breeders farm may yield some alpaca cria (babies), and a number of our members participate in Australian Alpaca Week during May each year.
If you would like further information about breeding Alpacas in this region or find that your questions have not been answered here or on the main AAA website please contact us. Our website is updated regularly. We invite you to spend some time with us now.
